Swae Lee Is 2019’s Crossover King Thanks to ‘Sunflower,’ ‘Close to Me’ and Madonna

When Swae Lee stepped into a Los Angeles studio last year, little did he know the song he laid down vocals for, “Sunflower,” would end up being one of 2019’s major hits. “I wanted to go out with a bang that night, and I got it out of me,” he says of the fateful evening at Electric Feel when he linked up with Post Malone to record the smash, which he co-wrote and for which he shares top billing. More than a billion Spotify streams later, the wistful tune has flowered into a bright, towering example of what a hybrid urban-pop hit sounds like right now.

“I think it got so big because the kids love it so much,” Lee says of the song. Known to his family as Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown, the artist built off the heat “Sunflower” generated, featuring on songs by Madonna (their collaboration “Crave” topped the dance charts) and turning up on Joji & Jackson Wang’s “Walking” alongside Major Lazer.

The rapper, singer and songwriter, also one-half of the duo Rae Sremmurd, made his mark in 2015, with catchy, quirky smashes such as “No Flex Zone” and “No Type” that began as underground anthems before exploding onto radio stations nationwide. More recently, Lee has proven that he has star power beyond the duo that made him famous. While Rae Sremmurd may ride again in 2020, the 26-year-old is, for now, enjoying working solo, featuring on other artists’ tracks and doing more songwriting.

According to the Inglewood-born artist, who not only writes his own features but has also written behind-the-scenes for names like Beyoncé (he co-wrote her 2016 track “Formation”), he finds lyrical inspiration from everyday life. To wit: “I basically do what I think is cool, you know? And I guess I’m a pretty cool guy, so that translates well to the people.”

But don’t expect Lee to give away too many of his songs next year. “Man, I ain’t gonna lie, got so many hits that I could just give to female artists because I’m good at writing love songs,” he deadpans, “but when I make those songs, I don’t wanna give them away. … I end up loving them myself and want to use them for myself. Plus, I feel like my songs are [of a] different caliber. I don’t want to just give them away and have [another artist] not take them seriously.”

Some Brilliant Ideas For The Plot Of A Potential ‘A Christmas Prince 4’

Netflix is going all out for the holidays with a third Christmas Prince film featuring a royal baby, ancient documents, and even a curse. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby takes the story of Aldovian power couple Queen Amber (Rose McIver) and now-King Richard (Ben Lamb) from fairytale marriage to fantastical whodunit. One mystery that remains to be solved, though, is the future of the series. So will there be A Christmas Prince 4? It’s likely the series will remain the gift that keeps on giving to Netflix subscribers.

News of the third movie was confirmed in March, so following that logic, fans should expect to wait a few more months for official word on the future of their favorite fictional royal couple. But given the series’ popularity and the fact that Netflix seems to be giving Hallmark a run for their money with Christmas-centric original films and programming, the chances of yet another sequel featuring the royal baby of Aldovia seem pretty good.

So far, Amber and Richard’s adventures have mirrored their IRL royal couple counterparts Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding came out just a few months after Meghan and Harry tied the knot, and now that royal baby Prince Archie has arrived, it’s Amber and Richard’s turn to welcome an heir to the throne. So what could possibly be next for the Aldovians should the Christmas Prince franchise get another sequel? Here are some ideas.

New York Adventures

The Dutchess and Prince are spending this year’s holidays away from the royal family with the Queen’s blessing, hanging with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland instead. Could a potential Christmas Prince 4 follow in the footsteps of Home Alone 2, with the royals lost in New York? There’s plenty that could go delightfully wrong if Amber and Richard head back to the Big Apple to visit Amber’s dad, including a reverse fish-out-of-water scenario, with the royals trying and failing to remain undercover.

Crossover/Time Travel Potential

A Christmas Prince got an acorn-shaped nod in Netflix’s other royalty-related Christmas film The Knight Before Christmas, confirming the two films exist in the same universe. That universe includes a time-traveling 14th century prince. Perhaps A Christmas Prince 4 could take a trip back into Aldovian history, or even visit some of the royal greats of yore elsewhere. Given that Royal Baby has sacred documents and ancient curses, time travel seems like a next logical step for the series. Who knows, Christmas Prince 4 could even have the Royal Family meet Charles Dickens for some Christmas Carol inspiration.

Royal Relations

If Aldovia’s royalty mirrors England’s, that might be bad news for the kingdom, as Prince Charles has eyes on trimming down the royal family. If Harry and Meghan might be excluded from the crown, what of the Aldovian heirs? Perhaps the royal family could learn the true meaning of Christmas with a scare that they might revert to commoner status.

While it’s too early to truly say what a possible Christmas Prince 4 could offer, one thing’s for sure — it wouldn’t feel like Christmas anymore without a visit to Aldovia.

Taraji P. Henson details her struggle with depression, anxiety

Taraji B. Henson says her depression would get so bad before she got help that she felt like she was in a “dark cloud.”

“I noticed the mood swings, like, you know, one day I would be up and the next day I would be down, feeling like I don’t want to go out in public, almost agoraphobic,” the 49-year-old “Empire” actress said in a new interview with Self magazine.

“There would be days when my brain wouldn’t stop racing with the worst scenarios in the world, which would heighten my anxiety,” she said. “There was no shame when I started to recognize it. It was like, ‘I have to get some help,’ because I’m the life of the party and when I go dark, I go dark. I don’t want to leave the house.”

Henson decided to seek the help of a therapist, who she found through “Empire” co-star Gabourey Sidibe.

“When you find that right person, oh my God, the sky cracks open,” she said. “It was extremely important for me to find a therapist who is a black woman, just because black women live in a different world than everyone else. Our problems, daily interactions, and expectations are different than most other people, so I wanted a therapist who I could cut through the societal foundation of who I am with, so that we could get to my specific issues.”

Henson also told the magazine that the “strong black woman” trope is a myth, and thinks it’s dangerous.

“There are some times where I feel absolutely helpless,” she said. “That’s human. Everybody feels like that. Just because I’m a black woman, don’t put that strong-superhero thing on me.”

Henson launched the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, named after her father, in 2018. The nonprofit aims to end the stigma surrounding mental health in the black community.
